- Yup, I failed at my own blogging challenge. Last week was just busy! But I think the point was to get me back into mostly regular posting, and it worked. For the most part.
- I’ve been toying with the idea of doing a video post, but I’m not sure I like the way I come across on film. You know how your voice always sounds weird on an answering machine? I think I sound like a little kid and I play with my hair too much. Maybe that’s a big NO for a video blog.
- Owen is sleeping so well that I hate to think about the next growth spurt/teething when he stops this lovely pattern. We’re down to one waking usually between 3 and 4, then back to sleep for a few hours before he comes in bed with us and sleeps till 7 or 8. This morning he was the last one up and Michael and I just lay in bed gazing at the little sleeping angel between us. Saaaaaapy, but true.
- O has also developed a mild case of baby eczema from the dry forced hot air in our house and it makes me sad to feel that soft baby skin all dry and bumpy. I’ve been slathering him in Burt’s Baby Bee lotion, but if anyone has a better recommendation, I’ll take it.
- Formspring is fun. Thanks for your questions!
- Clearly, this is a pretty lame Randomness post.
- Want to hear about poop? No? Oh well. Yesterday, it had been 24 hours since O had pooped and guys, that is a LONG time for him. This kid poops a ton and almost always out of his diaper. I don’t know what it is. I’ve gone up the next size in diapers. I’ve tried to keep him out of the sitting position if I know a poop is eminent. But still. STILL, he craps up his back. WHY? Is his little poop shoot oddly positioned upwards or something? You wouldn’t believe how many onesies I go through a week.
I have this system for stain removal because I can’t do laundry every day with the set up we have. If you need some poop stain solutions, I’m your girl.
(I never thought this would be something I’d be well-versed in. Poop stain removal. Who AM I?)
Anyway, so no poop. For 24 hours. This actually isn’t all uncommon for babies, but it is for my baby. He’s pretty routine. Morning, after naps, later afternoon. Pooptastic. But as the hours ticked on and no poop was coming, I began to worry that it was going to arrive when we were running errands or wake him in the middle of the night by puddling on his sheet or something.
In the end, it wasn’t that dramatic. He exploded in his jammies while my dad was holding him. Right up his back, of course.
It took a LOT of wipes to clean up this one. A LOT OF WIPES.
- He’s sitting and playing with blocks on the floor next to me right now. My little poopmeister baby boy. When did he get so big?

James had a period of time when he was first learning to sit where we had a LOT of poop explosions as well. He seems to have gotten past it for the most part, now that he’s onto a lot of solids (his poop is firmer).
God, this is a gross topic. Just wanted you to know that my baby had the same issue!

Have you tried Cetaphil lotion for the dry skin? I’ve heard wonderful things about that. Or Aveeno baby lotion? I use the Aveeno Baby on myself (I have insanely dry skin, esp. in winter — can’t try them on the baby because she’s not here yet!) and it’s pretty awesome. I’ve never cared for Burt’s Bees lotions much, I think they’re too thin for my preference — I like a creamier lotion like the Aveeno.

Aquaphor or Cetaphil or Eucerine for eczema (Aveeno is good to but not as good as the other three). You have to try to find the unscented, thickest lotion that you can. Also (and this might be hard) but the less you bathe him the better his skin will be. I have eczema and dermatitis and the Dr. told me that for anyone with the plague (as I call it) the less bathing (and when you do, try to just wash the parts that get the dirtiest) and the more lotioning the better – and the same for babies. (My girlfriend has a baby with severe dry skin problems and she told me she has to do the same thing.) You might also want to check out the soap you are using when you do bathe him and make sure that it’s as scent/chemical free as possible and has some moisturizer in it.

It really helps to have a humidifier in the room where baby sleeps! My new babe (10.5 weeks) had rough little cheekers for a few weeks there, but once we got the humidifier going, and used Johnson&Johnson bedtime lotion, they softened right up.

Two things.. I agree with the aquaphor, our little boy has been getting dry, red cheeks from cold weather and heater so our pediatrician told us aquaphor but I am in love with California Baby unscented shampoo/bodywash and their lotion in unscented as well. We hardly EVER have any problems with skin stuff because this stuff is Soo gentle, I use it on myself as well because I have ridiculously sensitive skin a bit of eczema on my arms since my pregnancy. Also we have a humidifier in his bedroom and one in living room since those are the two places he spends the most time and that helps a ton! Good luck and thanks for sleep advice last week, we are on day 5 and he slept 14 hours the last two nights with only one CIO session at around 4:))) Soo much happier (both of us)

We used Hydrocortizone with aloe for exzema which is what our doctor recommended. He actually gave us a perscription for a stronger hydracortizone when his exzema got worse.
And I soo hate to watch myself on video or hear my voice. I cringe every time!

I suffer from eczema year-round, and I really like St. Ives for my daily lotion application. And for my spotty, eczema breakouts (elbows, backs of legs), I used Hydrocortizone. It really helps with the bumps and flakiness.

Humidifier in the room? My skin is suffering so much this winter that I had to go buy one for myself, so I can imagine how awful the delicate baby skin feels!

I will second the aquafor! we use it on so many of our daughter’s body parts! she also got a prescription for some dermatitis on her back when it got really bad, which cleared it right up. our pediatrician also recommended a little bit of hydrocortisone on the bad areas at night (but don’t expose to sun with that one). Also I give our daughter baths with baking soda which helps with the diaper rash and clears up all her skin in general. that’s so weird about the pooping-up-the-back thing! she really only did that a couple times and I totally empathize!

Poop – welcome to my world – it took 3 of us to change my girl’s diaper/full outfit/changing pad cover on Saturday night. Even now that she is eating more real food the poop just manages to work its way up the back and down the leg and all over the place!!! and it smells worse now, yuck I hate dirty diapers. Have to remember that diapers are great at absorbing liquids, poop is not absorbable, so it has to go somewhere!

I obviously do not have any experience with this myself just yet, but I have heard from fans of cloth diapers that they do a MUCH better job at containing the poop explosions than disposable diapers do. If the poop explosions are a regular thing, maybe it’s worth trying one or two cloth diapers and seeing if they help?
(For what it’s worth, our tentative plan is to use disposables unless we find them to be less than satisfactory. If Piglet has similar poop explosion issues, that might be enough of a motivator for us to try cloth. I would be super curious to hear if cloth improved the issue for you!)

I’ve heard the same about cloth — part of the reason we’re planning to use cloth once the baby arrives. Seems that many cloth users find them to be better at containing not only the up-the-back poops, but also the leak-out-the-leg-holes poops too. good luck — I can’t yet imagine what a full-on poop explosion is like but I’ll be able to empathize soon, I’m sure!

Our laundry situation (in the basement accessible only by going outside) does not lend itself to a happy cloth diapering situation. And for all the merits of cloth, I like the ease of the disposables. I have considered possibly using a cloth diaper cover over the disposables, however.

Try Coconut Oil after baths. It’s our new-ish solution for all baby skin problems. It seems like it would be greasy, but it rubs in really well. It comes in a solid form, but easily softens with the heat from your hands. Good luck and getting back that baby-smooth skin!

Aveeno eczema plus A&D ointment or hydrocortizone at night while he sleeps is what I’ve been putting on my little one and within a week its all cleared up. Cetaphil is also great. Merry Christmas!

I soak poopy clothes in hot water with dishwasher detergent (the capsule kind), then throw them into the wash. It really works!

I use this great cream for Everly called “Gently Naturals”. She just has dry/sensitive skin. The cream was bought at Kroger. I also put mineral oil in her bath if it’s really bad and good LORD her skin feels/smells so wonderful afterwards (you can use regular baby oil too – pretty much same thing).

Use ALL Free and Clear for your laundry if Owen has eczema. It is even better than Dreft. Also, eczema has quite a few different ideas on how to help relieve the itch. You have to try it all until you find the right combination. I was told by a couple of doctors that if you get eczema as a baby you will outgrow it but if you get it after you turn 2 years old you will have it throughout your life. My son got it after 2 and it is severe. Wet wraps are wonderful in helping relieve the itch and put some moisture back into the skin. Good luck in finding the right combo for you guys.

My little one just got “diagnosed” with eczema a couple weeks ago and after trying everything under the sun, here’s what works for us (and what our ped suggested): 1% hydrocortisone on his face, twice daily at morning and night, in the daytime, use the Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Skin Cream (in the white tub), then on his body, I use the Shea Moisture brand (sheamoisture.com) Raw Shea Lotion (which has Frankincense and Myrrh in it, which makes it smell great and is perfect for the season, I guess). You can get that in the baby aisle at Target. I use it on his body – his legs had the white spots – and I cannot believe how much it works. I was wary to use all the big-brand products with crazy chemicals, and this works WAY better. Hope that helps!
