Period talk, boys. Move along.
Actually, more pill talk, which could be equally disturbing to most men.
So here we go.
About eight years ago when I started on the pill I was on the one everyone was on — Ortho Tri-Cyclin. Which worked great with no problems until my junior year of college when my hormones must have changed and I went all wackadoo. I switched to Ortho-Lo, and while my emotions went back to normal, I found myself with regular spotting always 10 days before my period.
Not a sign of anything wrong, but certainly an inconvenience. But I stuck it out for the next few years because a) it’s a hassle to change and b) I didn’t want to get all wackadoo again. But the spotting was getting to me so I switched again to Yasmin.
Same problem.
This brings us to last month, when I switched doctors and told her I was tired of the spotting and yeah, let’s do something about that. She prescribed me Yaz — a pill that claims to reduce all the symptoms of your period (bloating, cramping, crazy lady emotions) and give you a very light, very short period. Unlike most pills, Yaz works on a 24-pill schedule as opposed to the 21-pill packs like Ortho.
So here we are, the day after pill 24 and I’m just a sitting duck wondering when-oh-when the big P will arrive. I hate not knowing. For the past eight years I’ve know basically down to the hour when it will arrive. This is annoying.
This is also the time that my brain starts churning around and freaking out that omg could I possibly be pregnant? Uh, no. But I did decide to Google it, which lead me to a dozen message boards of women saying oh yeah, I hardly get my period on Yaz and the first month I thought I was pregnant.
FUN.
I mean, shouldn’t they put that on the label or something? And also, if that’s what it’s going to be like every month I’m switching back, because that little indication that all is how it should be? It’s a good thing.
I swear, Yaz must be in cahoots with EPT and First Response. They probably make a killing from women their first month on Yaz.
I haven’t jumped on the pregnancy test bandwagon, because I know I”m not. But I’d love to hear from anyone who is on/has been on Yaz. Peace of mind is always a good thing.
Men, you can open your eyes now.

I think any time you switch pills, your cycle gets wonky. Maybe not time to get pregnancy freak out just yet! I’m on Seasonale, which I love, because it’s only four periods a year, they last two days tops, with no cramps, no nothing. I should be their spokeswoman. But my cycle was a little weird when I first started it, until my body adjusted to the hormones. Good luck!

I’m so glad you shared this. I just switched to Yaz, after having similar issues with Yasmin. Now I will know to be aware. Thank you!

Your body just needs to adjust. After that, you’ll love Yaz.

well the important thing to remember about the pill that is misleading too all women, is that you’re not ACTUALLY having a real period when you are on the pill. you are having a withdrawal bleed. So essentially when you cut off the hormones, after day 21 or day 24, your body is just withdrawing from not having those, and bleeds. It’s not the same as a real period which is actually the shedding of the lining and a failed pregnancy. I bet it will take you a few months to regulate on this one – I wouldn’t worry too much.
When I wasn’t on the pill, i skipped an entire period once, and for no good reason. Our bodies sometimes do odd things, and adding hormones to the mix can really make it even crazier!!
This site sort of explains it: http://www.lybrel.com/works/
There was a blog I read written by a female gyno a while back but I can’t seem to locate it now.
Anyway that’s my thought…

You know, first of all, this totally affects guys, so I’m here to say:
I’m a guy and I just read this and I feel your pain.
That said, interesting point about being in cahoots with pregnancy tests. Totally makes sense.
P.S. I did read this with my eyes closed.

I’ve only ever used Loestrine 24fe…it’s great. No weirdness, no nothing. Although I usually just skip the 4 little iron tabs and the way fake, useless period like by gyn recommended.

Hahah I am on Yaz and had the same problem. The P starts about three days after the last pink pill. I start my pills on a Wednesday and get my P on a Monday.
For the record, Yaz is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Bigger boobs, less hormonal issues, less bloating . . . me likey!

i love yaz… but yes the first month is scary! i have to say though it keeps me SO SANE. i had a similar experience with ortho – made me a total crazy late in college. but i would stick with the yaz – i get (gross part) no more than three days a month, and only oh… well lets say less crazy than usual. way way way less crazy. lucky boyfriend.

Oh and I didn’t skip my first month. It just takes a few days longer than you expect to get rollin’ 🙂

I second whoever mention Nuvaring above. It is once a month in and out (which kind of ewww gross) but still. No forgetting. You even get in and out stickers for your calendar. Take those to the office, he he he.
I have only have one incident of the ring coming out at an inopportune time, in case you were needing way too much information.

i’ve always been told it takes a few months for your body to really settle in with a pill. so you may be this way now but it may change in a few months.
i’ve pretty much followed the same pills you did but from Yasmin (which is the Worst Pill Ever!) i moved to Loestrin 24. unlike the person above i’m not thrilled with it since i get about 2 weeks of spotting, but it’s on the same pill set-up at Yaz. and i have 4 placebo days, but my period doesn’t start until the 3rd one. and then when i start taking my pills again it cuts it off.
if that doesn’t make sense. i have placebos from sunday through wednesday. my period starts on wednesday and i start full pills on thursday. my period is gone by saturday morning.
but who knows because every body is so different. just my experience and i have a history of hate relatiohsips with birth control… it’s a necessary evil.

the pill is so tricky. my period used to be super regular, and now? i kind of have to wait and see. granted it has always come, but when i’m used to 9 am on tuesday, noon on wednesday seems LATE!
but all my friends are on the ring. and they say it’s AWESOME. and definitely helped them calm the crazy and stay balanced…

I use Yaz, and I love it. My periods are short (they were that way on Yasmin too). But they do take a while to start. I take my last pill on a Tuesday and usually start around the weekend (not so awesome).
I’m trying something new this month by taking it continuously so I don’t get the P on wedding or honeymoon. We’ll see how that works.

I take it that you like the regularity of having your period “on time.” For me, my period is so bad even with the pill that I’m on Seasonique…which gives me a period every 90 days, and I swear it’s amazing. But Yaz sounds pretty amazing too.
Give it at least 3 months before you try something else. Your body just needs to adjust.

I hate the pregnancy fear. I used to do that all the time on the pill. I think you’ll be fine, as long as you take the pill in a timely manner. Any time you switch pills, it takes your body some time to realign itself with the hormones.
I third the Nuvaring, however. It is so amazingly convenient. I still get some moodiness and bad cramps, but they last about 3 or 4 days only. I love it!
Good luck! You’ll be fine!

I had a similar issue with Ortho Lo in that it not only made me freak my shit out about being pregnant all the damn time, but also killed my sex drive. Except when I thought I was pregnant, I learned that it was time to break up with my ex boyfriend.
Good luck to ye. I find that being on the pill is a whole lot of trial and error.

this may be wierd/creepy/gross.. but keep me updated!
i’m on seasonale (well the generic version cause i’m cheap) and it’s great that i only get my period 4x a year, but i have the spotting 10days before.. so whats the point? i’m going to switch next time i go to the gyno so let me know if your period evens out next month!?
even tho my gyno tells me everytime as i sit in her office going “well i heard.. or i read..” “EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT” but she’s right & we all react differently, but it’s nice to know i’m not the only one going “is this normal?”

I also used to take Ortho in college and was so thankful when Ortho Lo came out. I was definitely less moody. I have been on it every since (except for a three month stint back on the regular Ortho b/c my school decided to not cover the Lo…but when I went bat-shit crazy I decided that I would rather pay a little more for my sanity than kill everyone around me).
And while Seasonal *sounds* like a good idea? What if it doesn’t work one month and then when you are supposed to get your period 2 months later? You are already pregnant??? Hells to the no. I need my monthly reminder that I am most definitely NOT pregnant.

Hello! First comment here, but I’ve been reading for awhile. Anyway, I had to chime in on this. Because before I got pregnant, I was taking Yaz. I don’t want to freak you out, but the 10 months I was taking Yaz sucked. My period was always early or late or didn’t come at all causing much paranoia (and many trips to the Walgreens to get a test…). And I actually did end up getting pregnant in February even though I was taking the pill. In the pill’s defense, however, I had gotten kind of irresponsible and was taking them when I remembered (read: different times of the day because for some reason I couldn’t remember to take it the same time every morning). Apparently, that’s a no-no with birth control.
So, long story short, you probably aren’t pregnant – it is probably just the pill being a bitch. My suggestion would be to talk to you doctor and get a new bc method, stat.

Sicilian Mama
Oh and I forgot to add – at one point I had my period for 2 weeks straight. Yeah…not cool at all. Basically, I am not a fan of Yaz and neither is my husband. And I agree with one of the previous commenters – every woman is different and will react differently to birth control, but at the same time, your birth control shouldn’t be causing you to worry.
That’s all!

I’ve never taken a pill [Nuva Ring for me all the way!] but my sister has the same issues. She would get CRAZY on most other pills and have horrible mood swings and migraines. She said she went on Yaz and the first few months she had little to no period, and then after about 4 months it made her crazy as well. I told her maybe it’s not the pill, maybe it’s just her excuse. She promptly didn’t speak to me for about 3.5 weeks. Have you ever considered the Nuva Ring?

I have been taking YAZ since March when I switched from Ortho Cyclen. I didn’t skip my first period on YAZ, I’ve never heard that it was common either… I haven’t really noticed either way if I have had less mood swings, irritability, PMS, etc… and my period is only slightly lighter, and maybe one day shorter. It’s fine, but I’m not a raving fan.

Yaz was weird for the first month I was on it, but a few months later it’s great. Your periods are SUPER short, and super light, but you get used to it.

I have an IUD, which means I get NO period anymore (I haven’t had a period in probably 6 months). Despite the fact that the IUD is thee most effective form of birth control (even more so than tubal ligation) and it is incredibly unlikely that I will get pregnant, I still find myself freaking out every so often just because I don’t have that monthly reminder that I’m not.

As far as I know they only let you have an IUD if you have had kids previously. I used to be on the ortho and I was regular but I hated having to remember. I am on the NuvaRing and so far so good. Definately a shorter period.

have you tried the nuvaring? I have never been able to do pills- they make my system go waaack. but the ring was nice, and I couldn’t even feel it. I LOOOOOOOVE Yaz. I guess I’ve never thought of the pregnancy scare issue because I was thrilled that I didn’t have symptoms. If you take it every day, you’re totally not pregnant. The thing about Yaz is that it’s a good idea to actually take the placebo pills because you’ll start your next pack the day after you take the last placebo, you don’t wait for your period. You’ll know after the first month when your period will arrive and it will be like clockwork, trust me.

I had the same spotting problem as you. My doctor put me on Yaz, and it made me crazy. Like break up with my boyfriend because it ate the last english muffin crazy. It also made me gain 10 pounds in about 3 months. Not cool. I guess it works differently with everyone though, and you just have to find one that works. Right now I’m on Loestrin24. I heart it. And this is totally TMI, but it makes me want to have more sex. And who doesn’t want that?

I took the generic for Yaz for a couple months and switched off of it when I got my period and/or spotting for the entire time. I switched to Ortho-Cyclin – not the Tri-Cyclin because that screwed me up too.

I’m on Yaz and have been for some time now. I get ZERO cramping, no bloatedness, and no crazy mood swings. The only thing that is still here is my INSATIABLE craving for chocolate as the big P approaches. However, the longer I’ve been on Yaz, the lighter and lighter my period has gotten. A couple of months back, I was certain I was pregnant b/c my period was nowhere to be seen — one day before I was to start a new pack. Freaked out, I bought a test, and those were the longest few minutes of my life. But it was negative. I discussed it with my doctor, and she explained to me that this is normal with this pill. When they say “shorter, lighter periods” they really mean it. She also said the longer you’re on any type of pill (and I’ve been on it for the last 8 years as well), the lighter your periods get. I love what it does for me, but some months, I’m all anxious about “am I or am I not pregnant?”
Tough call. But you’re not the only one!

Man. Funny this post was today. I was freaking out yesterday because I normally get my periods on Tuesdays and it didn’t come til about 10 this morning. But it came, at least!
After being on Ortho-lo for two years, I’m on the Nuvaring. It’s gotten better about staying in place… and I don’t have to worry about remembering to take pills. I recommend it. I think with all birth control methods it take a few months for your body to adjust.

No experience with Yaz, but when I was on the pill, I’d throw up for 1-2 days at the beginning of each pack. Then I switched to the patch. At first I’d throw up for first 1-2 days of a new patch…then it turned to just being nauseous. THEN I switched to Nuvaring and my life became wonderful =)
In and out issue is not really that gross. Come on…tampons are much, much worse than a little rubbery ring thing!

Ooooh, I can’t resist birth control talk!
I can totally relate. I have tried a variety of birth control options and I’m currently on Yaz. I routinely get my period the day before I’m due to start the new pack– the 28th day that would be? So give it a few days.
On Yaz my period barely last 2 days, it is fabulous. But I constantly think I’m pregnant because my short, light periods just don’t convince me that I’m not.
Nuvaring was great! I loved it, but I spotted on Nuvaring– so that may happen to you also.

I’ve taken Yaz for about a year now, and I just got prescribed another pill (Loestrin) because Yaz gave me worse cramps. But really, don’t worry about that first month because, with the Yaz, I had a scare too. . . even when I knew with 100% certainty, I couldn’t be preggers.

Oh my, I feel your pain. I have to take the POP pill because of my migraines, so I don’t know a thing about Yaz (we probably don’t get it here, anyway), but I don’t think they’ve invented the pill that doesn’t cause spotting for me or make me think I’m pregnant, so in a weird way, it was reassuring to know I’m not alone.
What I have learned from all of the different pills I’ve tried, though, is that the first packet almost always screws you up a little, so I would think if you stick with it you’ll be able to get a better idea of how it’s going to be for you.

Finding a good BCP is so difficult. I was on OrthoTri for years, went to OrthoLo, back to OrthoTri. Then I was off the pill for a year and went nuts. Went back on but tried Yasmin instead. Was violently ill for about a year. Dangerously low blood pressure, lost a ton of weight, migraines, GI problems, the works. Now I’m on Trinessa which is generic OrthoTri. Still not entirely happy with it but now I’m too afraid to switch.
I feel your pain, Molly.

I have actually been on yaz for a good year now and I love it. I totally understand what you mean about the whole wackadoo thing…that’s how I was for so long. Call me crazy, but I use to be on Alesse, I would get the brand name, but then I switched to the generic and I totally felt different. My doctor said it was impossible, that they were the same thing, but I could feel the difference. I switched doctors as well and she put me on yaz. It does take a little getting use to, but wait a couple more months and I swear you won’t want to change. I am actually thinking about getting mirena, the IUD. I have heard really amazing things about that from friends also.
We all feel your pain though!

So count me as another in a string of girls who just loves to put in her two cents. 🙂
I worked for a pharmaceutical company; selling oral contraceptives; which means I got one heckuva education on this topic. (yes, as a matter-of-fact heckuva is the technical medical term – I know you were wondering)
Most OC’s have an estrogen and a progestin, at varying levels. Every woman is going to have a personal reaction to each compound, at each dose, that’s why this gets so complicated so fast. Any pill with “low”, or some derivative of the word, in the title likely has only 20mcg of estrogen. These are much more likely to cause break-through bleeding (BTB) and do not have the proven benefits of at least 30mcg of estrogen. They *might have some lower risks.
Bottom line my dear Molly, is that some combination of compounds, at some dosage, will help you feel human and remain sans baby, provided you take it properly. Unfortunately the only road to this miracle combination is paved in experimentation. Give it 90 days, if it isn’t working for you, head back in for something different.
(I highly recommend an IUD if you are planning to wait to have children awhile. And yes, they will give them to women who have not had kids. I am very much enjoying my 4+ years of NO artificial hormones. :D)

Allison aka HaselBride
Don’t know if your ob/gyn mentioned it, but some of the pills (like Yaz, Loestrin, etc.) that cause shortened, lighter periods give some women barely any period at all. I was on Loestrin for three years and only some months did I have a period and even then it was really ridiculously light. I’d wait the three months they suggest before giving up on Yaz entirely.
Good luck! I’m in the process of finding a new pill after my last started giving me two periods a month. I am having one hell of a time and my not understanding, judgmental doctor is not helping.

You definitely don’t have to have had children to get an IUD. I have one and have no babies, along with about 7 or 8 of my friends.
Some ob/gyns are hesitant to insert them though because they don’t know how.

I have been on three pills – Ortho-Tri, then Loestrin, now Errin (a POP pill). Every time I switched, my body freaked out and I went into paranoia mode. And every time I went into paranoia mode, I was never actually pregnant.
(Now, when we decided to start our family, I read that it might take several months for us to get pregnant because I was on the pill for so long. I was pregnant within 30 days of going off birth control. What was that somebody else said up there? Every body is different. Yeah, I second that.)
July 24, 2008 at 5:22 am
Guilty Secret
I just switched to Yasmin after 8 years on Microgynon (in the hope that Yasmin would give me beautiful skin in time for the wedding…) No issues as yet (except perhaps heightened sex drive which is score, but I couldn’t say for sure after just a couple of weeks) but I just wanted to say that I did a lot of research before switching and it seems that all the reviews are contradictory because different hormones effect different people in different ways. So, I think the only answer is to be patient, give it 3 months and see how it goes once your body adjusts.
Also, with most 21 days it’s perfectly safe (even recommended for some women) to only have 3 or 4 bleeds a year… I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Just wondering, while we are having this birth control forum going, have any of you ever used the implant? Nobody’s seemed to emntion it. I have a Implanon implant and haven’t had a period for three years. I had spotting for the first two weeks and then nothing. No PMT, no side effects that I can see, no ongoing cost, and I wondered why more people don’t use it. At the time I asked the doctor who inserted it (in a regular GP visit) what the statistical failure rate was, knowing that all birth control methods have one, and she responded that so far she was unaware of any pregnancy occuring during correct usage.
I love not having periods and knowing that I can’t possibly be pregnant! (And you can get pregnant the first month its removed, too).

Not on Yas, but on Loestrin and the same thing happens. I only have 4 days of placebo and the P is about 45 seconds long every three months. Convenient yes, but the peace of mind can sometimes be lacking… I’m getting used to it. At least I feel good!

I also used to be on Orto-T, but switched b/c i went through a very bad moody spell after many years on it. They put me on yaz for the same reasons they did for you and I love it!!!!!! Stick with it! It is crazy b/c you do get it for a very short period of time and it hardly exists. My current boyfriend actually made a comment about it not interferring with our sex life. Oh and does it ever increase your sex drive! At first i was going insane b/c i wasn’t dating anyone, but now it’s all good and my boyfriend definitly reaps the benefits!

Honestly, I’d rather buy the three packs of tests and take them almost every month than buy tampons. I’m on Microgestin, which is a generic for I don’t know what, and most of the time completely skip my period (which my doctor says is fine). I’m a freak-out sort of person myself, so I just keep tests handy to be sure, and the entire process is two minutes rather than five days.

I have been changing pills almost every 7 months since I started my periods 10 years ago. It is the most annoying thing ever! I can’t seem to find a pill that can balance controlling my periods and my emotions. I just started on Yaz 4 months ago and it seems to be doing well. I always freak out about my period because it starts 3-4 days after I take the ‘sugar’ pills. So I always get my period for 3 days when I start the first pills of my next pack..if that makes any sense. I did have my doctor prescribe another pill for me to take as needed because he said that a lot of people have issues with spotting 10 days before the period, like you mentioned. We’ll see how it goes. I hope this one works out for you!
