Have you ever noticed that a visit home has restorative powers? I’ve been on edge for about, oh, 10 weeks now and was tired of all things Rhode Island. So when the opportunity to go home to New York the same time my sister was appeared, I jumped on it.
The drive is 3.5 hours and while not short, it’s not too long either. It gave me just enough time to clear my head and remember our wedding as I sung along with the CDs the DJ gave us after the wedding.
The weekend was just…so nice. Shopping, chatting and snuggling with my mom, laughing and watching old home movies with my sister, looking at childhood artwork and catching up with my dad.
Though too quick as always, the weekend refreshed and rejuvenated me. My spirit feels renewed and lifted.
I always get a little sad on the way back home, knowing that it will be a least a few months before I see them all again. But as I crossed the roads through New York, Connecticut and finally Rhode Island this morning, I realized I’m lucky to have them all within reach.

I’m so jealous that you live so close to your family. I’m about a $500 plane ticket away at any given time – apparently no one wants to fly to Idaho. It’s nice to be near family when you’re feeling blue. Hopefully it helped.

I haven’t commented in so long, but felt the need to today!
I totally know what you mean. Since being out here I obviously can’t get home that easily. It’s about once a year that I see my parents and at different times! I was able to see them 3 times last year which was awesome and of course I just saw my mom in Jan which was almost a little too long haha. Her being w/ me for a solid 8 days was a lot haha, but I would love it if I was a quick drive away.
You know what the funny thing is? When I was living in Philly, I was only 2 hours away, but months went by w/ out seeing them. I think if I was there now, I would definitely go home every 5 weeks or so.
I am glad you had some quality time this past weekend though. Just enough to go back to RI w/ a renewed outlook on things!

what a nice post! I went to uni, and then lived for a couple of years about 4 hours from home – that drive was always a lot of fun; not too long. It’s always sad to leave, but being there is so refreshing. Now I’m about 22 hours and $1500 from home – can’t wait to get back there again!!

A trip home sounds so great to me right now – especially after reading this post. I was watching this little old lady at the grocery store today and I was like ohhhh I miss my Grams!

I moved away from Texas a little over a year ago. I now live in Oregon, and the thing I like least about it is how far I am from home and my family. When I was having a bad time before, I could always just throw my things in the car and head home. Now…I only get to go home a couple of times a year, and it’s a complete production that involves trains, planes and long car rides. Whatever stress relief I get from home is completely obliterated by the time I finish the day of travel it takes to get back to Oregon.
I really hope I get to move back sometime soon.

I think until I start a family my parents house will always be “home” until then everything is sort of just temporary.

Trust me, I know what you mean. When my husband was working away a lot the best way to clear the stresses of being alone was to visit my parents.
Now we live near them and I can experience that feeling whenever I like. It’s awesome 🙂
