So many of you have asked about my wedding rings. Right after the fall my finger started swelling. I didn’t think it was broken, just jammed, but figured I should take my rings off anyway. They wouldn’t budge.
I burst into tears — again — because I was terrified the hospital staff was going to have to cut my beautiful symbols of marriage off my finger. Between the pain and the fear of losing my rings, I was a mess.
Michael, who thinks about things and doesn’t emotionally react right away (unlike his crazy, crazy wife), went into the bathroom, brought out some hand lotion and put some on my finger. After a little wiggling, they came right off. Phew.
The nurse told me we had done the right thing, because by the time we got to the hospital my finger was twice its normal size.
So now, the bling is in a box. I can’t wear them for 2-4 weeks until the swelling goes down and they don’t fit on any other fingers so I can’t even switch it up.
Michael is still wearing his ring, of course, which we joked makes it look like he’s cheating on his wife when he goes out in public with me, the ringless woman.

You can always do like Carrie did in SATC. Wear them on a chain around your neck, that way they’re close to your heart π

I second the on-a-chain-around-your-neck; that’s what my friend did while she was pregnant.

I third the necklace idea! And thank goodness they didn’t have to cut them off, because that would have hurt. And hopefully there won’t be a next time, but if there is, put your hand in ice water, helps with the swelling and your rings would have come off just as easy.

Windex! I went to the emergency room with a broken wist and swollen fingers and they used windex to take my rings off! They slid right off.
Hope you recover quickly!

Good thinking, Michael!! How clever of you to have married him π I agree with the chain/necklace approach – I’ve been wearing my rings around my neck for the past 3 months because of health issues with my hands. Every time I feel them there, I smile.

Oh my goodness. This sounds so painful. Sorry! π¦ Hope you end up on the 2-week schedule, instead of 4? π

Ooh, get better soon!
I always feel naked without my wedding and engagement rings.
It’s funny because I never was able to stick to any item of jewellery before i got married.
But my wedding rings mean so much – I can understand your fear of having them cut off you.

OHHH the necklace idea is awesome, you should give it a try.
Hope your finger is getting better soon. And it’s cool how your husband is pretty calm about things.

Yikes! I’m glad that you were able to get the rings off before your finger swelled too much. Definitely go with the necklace idea.

I totally feel your pain. Last summer I fell down the stairs in our brand new house… and put out my left hand to break my fall. Well the result wasn’t pretty. Both the ring and middle finger bent all the way back and broke right on the knuckle. Thank goodness I had taken my rings off when I got home. After the ER visit and the next day orthopedic doc… they were swollen beyond recognition. Hopefully yours weren’t as bad as mine. It is going on 10 months and I can still only wear my rings when the weather is cold out. The cold helps my knuckle shrink a bit and then they go right on. I am not looking forward to a ring-less summer… but I will wait and see how that works out. The ortho doc told me that since my knuckle broke, they would never be what the originally were. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I love my wedding rings- I have a band and a ring with a pearl, we don’t do diamonds in Chile (it sucks that it’s the ONE tradition we don’t have down there.. LOL) but I still love my rings! Hubby doesn’t wear one though.
