When Owen was a baby he would bust out of the swaddle so often that I decided he must not like it. I stopped swaddling him early on and he was never a great sleeper. When Ryan was born I decided he would be swaddled, no matter what, and had great success with the Miracle Blanket. Of course I can’t attribute all the sleeping highs and lows with swaddling, but I know it helped significantly.
By the time Ryan was four months old he was such an excellent sleeper, but he was starting to wake himself up breaking out of his swaddle. I tried all the gradual weaning techniques to no avail. I even tried going to a sleep sack cold turkey and he completely lost his mind, unable to settle and sleep until I swaddled him again. We needed a new solution and quickly.
As I poured over parenting forums, I kept coming across the mention of a blanket called the Zipadee-Zip. It got great reviews, so I had to check it out.
The Zipadee-Zip is a blanket that helps ease your baby gently from swaddling to using a blanket. The starfish design allows the baby to have their arms free, but gives just enough resistance to keep them feeling snugly. There’s no need to worry if the baby rolls over, because unlike with a swaddle, they would be able to use their arms.
Designed by Stephanie — a mom looking for a solution to her own swaddle-weaning problem — each blanket is handmade to order and comes in both stretch cotton or fleece. See how it works here:
Our Zipadee-Zip arrived just as I was getting Ryan for bed. I figured it was just as good a time as any to try it, so I nursed him, zipped him up and hoped for the best.
He slept 10 hours before waking up to nurse, just like that. That was the entire transition. There was no fighting, no crying. Just a happy, un-swaddled baby. Each night was the same, and even his naps got better.
As per Stephanie’s suggestion, I started with a small Zippy to make the transition as smooth as possible. I like that it covers his hands while he sleeps keeping them warm and his face free of scratches. Ryan takes comfort in sucking on his hands as he falls asleep, so I have to wash it a little more often than I might otherwise, but I’m ok with that. If he’s fussy, he immediately calms down as I zip him in and he wakes every morning with a huge smile on his face. To say I love the Zipadee-Zip is an understatement. As a matter of fact, I just ordered the medium today! Eventually I will wean him from the Zipadee-Zip as well, but from what I’ve read that usually happens without a problem.
Do you want a Zipadee-Zip?!
Here’s your chance to get one! Stephanie has graciously offered up a free Zipadee-Zip to one lucky reader. If you don’t have kids yourself, it would make a great gift.
To enter, leave a comment about anything you want. Easy, right? I will randomly select a winner next Friday, January 14th.
Good luck!

oh please oh please! this sounds fantastic. my little nugget is just 4 months old, and i’ve been putting her in warm jammies to help her stay snuggly, but those hands…oh those hands. she’s too big for her swaddle blankets and she’s too long for most other blankets. good grief, this would be fabulous!

Wow, that looks awesome! I would have loved to have that for Nate when he was done swaddling. (The music in that video has GOT to go, though. lol)

Yes please!! My 3 month old is rapidly outgrowing his SwaddleMe but has been sleeping even better since we started swaddling again (I didn’t think he liked the swaddle around 1 month old, so we stopped…thank goodness we started again!!). I don’t know what we are going to do when he gets much bigger!!

This looks awesome! It would make a great gift for my soon to arrive niece or nephew. Our little guy HATED swaddling, but luckily was pretty content once we figured that out and stopped forcing it on him. Seriously, if the kid couldn’t get his hand in his mouth he would lose his mind.

Having my 2nd in March, and my #1 definitely was a swaddle escape artist, so up for trying anything to improve the sleep experience of #2! 🙂

Oh, baby #2 would LOVE to try this out when she gets here in April! Lorelai even managed to bust out of the Miracle Blanket (I KNOW, I didn’t think it was possible either) so we had some interesting transition time with her that I wouldn’t mind avoiding this go-around.

I have tried several different swaddle methods with my first two boys! Never had real success with any once they hit a few months old. I would love to try this one with my third boy due Feb 6th!

I would love to try this with my 5 month old son Owen. I’m a HUGE fan of swaddling (former NBN/NICU nurse) and was devastated that I couldn’t find any type of swaddle that could contain my very active son. He still wakes up 2-3 times a night, so anything that might keep him asleep for longer stretches would be so much appreciated!!

I’m due with my third – first boy! – in May and wouldn’t have survived the other two without swaddles. I have already dug them out for the newest addition and would LOVE to have one of these on hand for the dreaded day when the swaddle must end.

We love the Zippy, too! My little guy just turned 1, and he has been sleeping in a Zippy since about 4 1/2 months old. I have been debating about ordering a new one and start the transition out of it. I need to read up on tips on weaning off of the Zippy, but for now, he loves it, so we’ll just keep on using one!

So looking forward to breaking the swaddle habit with my little one! He wakes up every 3-4 hrs, usually with an arm or both out. But he won’t sleep without being swaddled or held, so this may be the only solution.

I need one of these so badly! My 4.5 month old is addicted to the miracle blanket and is hardly fitting in it anymore and can’t sleep without it. I would LOVE to try this. My 3.5 year old stopped napping when she was 2 and is the kind of kid that goes all day and NEVER slows down….so having a baby that sleeps well is a sanity saver. Fingers crossed, I need this item!!

Enjoyed reading your recent posts. I started a blog to do as you have done with your little ones. BUT turns out I had twin boys to go with my 3 yr old little girl. My time is crunched but I still enjoy reading from the lives of other mamas with my phone when I can. Anyways I would love to win a fleece zippy for the cold days!

I have been stalking the zipadee-zip for about 2 weeks now. My almost 6 mth old has started rolling over back to tummy at night. Time to lose the swaddle. One arm out, she was up every. dang. hour! Slowly loosening it, broke herself free and was up every. dang. hour. On to the Internet to search for some help. Found mention of the Zipadee-zip. Read all the awesome reviews, and looked high and low for a negative review. Can’t find a one. So why haven’t I bought one yet? The price. Which I totally understand. But being unemployed (yeah that’s a whole other story), the cost is a bit out of my price range. Winning would be awesome.

My little cuddle bug LOVES her Zippy! She was an amazing sleeper until right at 6 months when she started breaking out of the Miracle Blanket and waking up every hour and a half. In sheer desperation I ordered the Zipadee-Zip and the very first night she only woke up once! We definitely need more than one in the house though so I can wash one and use the other! God Bless Stephanie and her invention!
P.S. Before posting this, I checked out more of your blog… I am now hooked! I teared up at your letter to Owen – 30 Months. I’m only at 7 months with my first, but every little moment is a treasure!

I would love this. Now that it has gotten cold (single digits at night), he is constantly waking up because he is cold and his little hands are like ice cubes. He’s gotten too long for our swaddle blankets and he just doesn’t sleep as well in a sleep sack.

I had the pleasure of being pregnant with five of my closest friends which sounds crazy (and totally not planned!) but it has been a blast having play dates and trading our baby secrets, obviously with sleep tips ranked towards the top. I have been trying to wean my 4 month old from swaddling and after all the reviews, I think this may be the ticket .I would love the opportunity to have the next big purchase to share with our new.mommy crew.

OMG I need one of these now! We are at six months and still using the Miracle Blanket every night (and re-doing it in the middle of the night since she’s been breaking out of it for months. I’ve tried one arm out, cold turkey, the Woombie, and a Halo sleep sack swaddle to transition–all major fails. I was hesitant to buy yet another sleep thing, but would love to try this!

oh my gosh i’d LOVE one!!! miss Kate never loved the swaddle (i fear that we may have given up too quickly) but was always a decent sleeper so i never worried about it… until now. her sleeping seems to have regressed (much to my dismay & the coffee company’s enjoyment) so I’d LOVE to try this!!!

My little one is 7 months old. She cannot sleep without her miracle blanket. But lately she has been escaping from it several times a night. She can’t go back to sleep until I wrap her up again. She wakes up to nurse 3-5 times a night. I would love to see if this would help us both sleep better.

We are still swaddling (after a month of success without the swaddle around 3 months, it was brought back thanks to the 4 month sleep regression). I know we need to stop soon. Caroline busts out every morning around 4 am and even getting her swaddled at bedtime is becoming an issue. She’s too strong! My friend has this blanket and loves it! I thought about ordering one, but now that we’re on the SAHM budget, it is likely not happening. I’d love a full night’s sleep again!

I would very much like to have this for my as-yet unborn first grandchild. Of course, we didn’t have these when my children were babies, and while the virtues of swaddling were known, it was much harder to keep a blanket wrapped securely around the little squirmers even with the fancy tucks you would try. I realize he won’t need it at first, but I believe in planning ahead 😉

Im delurking after reading since your wedding 🙂 because transitioning my son out of his swaddle two months ago was anything but graceful. our savvy technique consisted of leaving one arm out as suggested but having to then duck tape over the velcro closures on the swaddleme to keep him from being able to houdini himself out of it…… it would be nice to have a solution like looked less like a torture device next time around

I would love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love one of these!! Our daughter has been keeping up awake all night for 2 weeks now. My husband and I have been trying to wean her off of being swaddled because she constantly breaks free from the blanket we use. She wakes up screaming bloody murder! My husband has been out of work (1 year in February) and I make less than my younger sister does working retail at the mall. We would love one of these so we can get a decent night sleep and focus on getting our lives back on track. I don’t need to keep working on 2 hours a night and he needs to spend his time job searching! Looks like a wonderful product and hope we have a shot at winning!!

Genevieve is going to be 6mos on the 22nd and she’s just on the brink of rolling to her belly from her back. We need to do the swaddle transition ASAP! This child is going to give me grey hair before I’m 25 with worry. I would feel so much better if she could still be snuggled but move freely if she does roll. She sleeps through the night 11-12hrs with her Woombie and I don’t want that to stop!

My little boy is 5 months (!) and still being swaddled just because we’re trying to stop him from scratching himself awake (and to the point of injury). This sounds like it would be a great transition as he has been regularly busting out of his swaddles!

We’ve struggled with my 9 month olds sleeping since he was born due to reflux and other issues and one of the things that made a big difference was swaddling… The only problem is now he needs it to be able to sleep. The zipadee zip would make the transition sooo much easier!!

I second loving the zipadeezip! We tried everything to transition our lo out of a swaddle, and nothing worked till we used a zipadeezip! My 7 month old son loves it, and looks so cute in his zippy:) we started him in a small size, and have graduated to a medium. My son likes to suck on his hands for comfort as well so I’d love to get another medium zippadeezip and cut down on my laundry;) thank you for your blog & the giveaway!

I am to be a Great Grandmother the first of February. This will be their first child. I saw this on Shark Tank and thought it would be an awesome gift for their first child. Where can I get one.

November 29, 2014 @10:40 a.m. I just watched Shark Tank last night. I saw you win a contract, CONGRADULATIONS ! My 33 year old neice who swore she would never have kids is happly 4 months along and will find out Monday Dec. 1 the sex of the baby. Hi. I will be a great grandmother this June. My granddaughter lives across the country from me and this will be her first child. I would love to win one of these swaddlers for her. I saw you on the shark tank and was so impressed with your product and you did a fantastic job introducing it. I was so happy to see you won a contract.

I was horrified to see my daughter wrap her first born son who is now 5 1/2 months old so tightly at night with a swaddle. It looks mummified as both hands were bound so tightly on his sides.Researching for swaddles for older babies of 6 months and older, I saw your article and mentioned it to my daughter. She said all swaddles have to be tighten or else it doesn’t serves the purpose.Hope I can try your swaddle for my grandson and prove her wrong.

I love the Zipadee-Zip! It totally helped my son sleep an average of 2 hours more a night 🙂 Woop Woop for the winner of the sack. These Zipadee-Zips are gamechangers for your sleep and babies rest.

I absolutely loved the zipadee-zip! I was so surprised when my baby did not wake up for his feeding the first night I used it. He slept right through! That’s a true gift to a tired new Mom 🙂

My daughter outgrew the swaddle by the time she was 3 months old! Instead of me doing a different swaddle wrap technique, we just purchased the simply and effective swaddle transition blanket from http://www.sleepingbaby.com called the Zipadee-Zip!
