Sorry for the lack of posting this week. Between still not having our laptop and a bout of excruciating sciatic pain that literally had me crawling on my hands and knees sobbing, I haven’t really made it to the computer. Today is day four of butt/leg pain, but between ice, heat, yoga and a massage I’m finally able to walk (sloooowly) around. So that’s a plus.
Little boy is 37 weeks cooked –considered full term — and is most definitely head down in my pelvis, most likely causing the pain by pressing on a nerve. As far as I’m concerned, he can come out any time now. I pick Wednesday (collective laugh from mommy readers) because it’s supposed to be a nice sunny day and um, I’m ready for him to come out. So yeah, Wednesday. Works for me. (He’s clearly not coming out Wednesday.)
The house is almost 100% baby ready and part of that is a half-packed hospital bag. I *think* I have all that I could need, but I don’t want to forget anything so I’m reaching out to you guys. What should I pack in the hospital bag?
So far I have…
– An easy-to-nurse-in nightgown and some comfy, stretchy clothes for after birth
– Outfits for little boy, plus diapers and wipes
– “After” essentials, like pads and throw-away undies and socks. (Yeah, it was fun shopping for THOSE. I texted my sister from the feminine product aisle in a panic because it’s been a long time since I bought pads and whoa, the options!) (For the record, because we’re honest over here at TLM…I bought the Always super long with wings. I have no idea if that was a good choice.)
– To be included are toiletries and snacks, plus the camera and phone charger, but those will be at the last minute, plus some clothes for Michael.
What am I missing? I don’t want to over pack, but I don’t want to forget something that I really wish I had.
I was also told to steal practically everything you can get your hands on at the hospital, especially the big mesh underwear. Guys, BIG MESH UNDERWEAR. You know there’s going to be a totally honest post after the birth, don’t you? Apparently the big mesh undies are fabulous for packing with ice to sooth the lady bits. Ah, the glory of life.
So I enlist you, dear readers. Pack my hospital bag for me.
No, really. Like, want to come over and help? I’m still pretty gimpy.

Have you read Emily’s hospital packing list? http://captainhambone.typepad.com/not_that_you_asked/2006/10/the_great_big_h.html
Seems to cover everything. Good luck!

I brought WAY too much stuff with me… and you will too. Because it is a rite of passage and you just will… JUST in case the hospital doesn’t have everything you need. HAH!
I guess your going to So. County… but at W & I diapers and wipes were not necessary. And actually, they’ll advise against using baby wipes for a while – supposedly even the sensitive ones are too harsh for baby bums! So they make you use blue disposable cloths and warm water. Fun times.
THE MESH UNDERWEAR IS FANTASTIC! There is no denying the comfort… and at this point, there is no trying to be sexy down there. HAH!
Cozy socks were a lifesaver for me. Some people love the hospital socks but… I much prefer my own cozy socks.
I loved having my own pillow and the boppy… to breast feed or lay baby on just so I could oogle her… all day.
SNACKS are a must! 🙂 Wishing you well in the last few weeks – he will be here SO soon. In the meantime, I hope he comes sooner than later and that your sciatic pain clears up. 🙂

Sorry, but I don’t have any advice for you in the hospital bag packing department, but I just wanted to tell you that I am sorry that your back is hurting, and hope that it gets to feeling better soon (preferably before your little one decides he is ready to appear 😉 ) And I will be praying for a Wednesday birth for you too! 🙂 Cant wait to read all the comments…I am definitely storing all this info for later use LOL.

I’m almost 23 weeks but had a friend e-mail me what she packed in her bag. Offhand I remember her mentioning lip balm. Apparently your lips get very dry!

I had my son 3 weeks ago and had to have an emergency C-section. Definitely bring you own pillow or the boppy and some bland snacks in case you’re not up to eating right after. Those are lifesavers! Good luck and Congrats!

I will start with telling you the extra long pads are a good move, but take all the giant ones you can from the hospital (the first week they are totally the best even though they are like wearing a mattress.) Honestly I used the hospital stuff, that way I didn’t have to wash a gown, underwear or socks.
As for the bag, the one thing I loved having was a light robe to cover the hospital gown so I wasn’t showing off my rear while in labor. My husband found it that we went back home to pack an overnight bag for himself too because we ended up in the hospital three nights total. Also, bring necessities like Tylenol and whatnot for your husband. Lots of hospitals have WiFi so you can bring your laptop and digital camera cord to share pictures right away if you so desire.
One more thing, if you plan to breastfeed and your insurance covers durable medical equipment you might be able to get a breast pump for free if your doctor writes you are prescription for one. I got mine free that way and saved over $200. It is worth checking into.
Good luck and I all my best!

I’ve never had a baby, but I’ve seen other bloggers take their own pillows with a pretty pillow case on it since it will be in all of your pictures.
And though I’m a baby virgin, I had uterine surgery and am ALL ABOUT the giant mesh panties. They are awesome. You’ll need your own pads at home, but they provide you with these gigantic pillow looking pads that rock. Unfortunately, mine were not sticky and one fell out of the panties onto the floor while I was using the restroom, and I had to stand there (ahem, NEEDING the pad, if you know what I mean) waiting 5 WHOLE minutes for a nurse to get me another one. So make sure you have a couple of spares near the bathroom at all times!
Good luck 🙂

Leave the diapers, wipes, and pads at home–hospital has enough. Make sure you have all your toiletries–having them in case you think you won’t use them is comforting not that you’re going to necessarily be dolling up. Camera! I’m sure everyone else’s comment will say what I would so I won’t say any more. : ) I got a really good lip balm for dry lips and that was used often. There’s lots of huffing and puffing to do and it dries your mouth out, including the lips!
I have to pack my bag soon! Ah!

A pretty pillow case – for all those “just born” photos of the baby and to add some color to the hospital room for photos of you and your family holding the newborn. Excited for you! Sorry the last few days have been painful – it will be worth it soon when you have a new family member 🙂

I would also include…
– Slippers! Even though it’s summer, hospitals are kept nice and chilly (so the docs don’t sweat all over you. Gross.)
– Boppy or other nursing pillow
– I also bought throw-away panties and thought it was the best. The mesh ones are great, but I didn’t want to be wearing them 24/7. I would go up a size (or two…) those big pads take up a lot of room. Eeek.
– Sugar-free hard candy (in case you aren’t allowed to eat during labor) I have also read that sucking on candy can help speed labor along …
– Facial cleansing cloths, the kind you don’t have to wet or wash off, so after labor (when you are too tired to do anything) you can at least clean your pretty face!
– Baby mittens. My baby, Jack, was born with witch-like fingernails.
– Nursing bra with NO UNDERWIRES. Ever. Horrific. My fav sleep bra: http://www.motherhood.com/Product.asp?Product_Id=975400361&MasterCategory_Id=MC29
You shouldn’t need diapers and wipes, hospital will have those for you. Ask for the nose-sucker bulb thingy before you leave! The store-bought versions are no where near as good. So excited for you!

I can’t contribute much, obviously, but having been in the hospital a few times for other reasons, I say chapstick!!!
And “lady bits”? Love it. So darn funny.

Congrats and I hope the time between now and when the little man is born flies by! I had my first 8 months ago and these items were super helpful –
sleep mask, flip flops for the shower, my own toiletries, a long open cardigan, chapstick, headbands (for labor and beyond) and makeup. I’m totally not a girly, girl, but it felt really good to feel at least a bit put together when the rest of your body is doing crazy stuff! Also, steal everything you can from that room (the blankets are the best and the awesome cross-over shirts are so easy to put on a squirmy baby) and have your husband bring a box of joe and doughnuts for the nurses – they will treat you like the queen that you are. Good luck and thanks for your blog. I’m from RI and have been reading for a few years – your honesty and great writing are a pleasure!

I wish I had thought of the pretty pillow!
So I had a c-section, and my experience was a little different, but here are my tips:
IF i had had a vaginal birth, i would have brought preggo pops, because people told me that’s the only thing they let you have while in labor, and can help with nausea.
you don’t need underwear or pads, because you can get plenty in the hospital. i stole so many of the gauze underwear that i wore them for 4 weeks after the c-section. hopefully you won’t end up with a c-section, but if you do, these will be a life-saver at home too so steal steal steal!
we also brought an itzbeen that we bought. it’s from babiesrus or target. you use it to track the diapers and feedings that the nurses are constantly asking you about. and they LOVED out itzbeen! we used it for a week or so after we got home too.
you won’t need that many outfits for the baby, as they have them in a hospital white shirt until you are discharged. you don’t need receiving blankets either in the hospital, and the ones they give you are wonderful so steal some of those too! they work great for swaddling
we brought our own bottle so we could use breast-like nipples that the lactation consultant suggested. we ended up having to supplement formula in the hospital because her blood sugard dropped, so i was glad we had brought our own to avoid nipple confusion.
i was in the hospital for 4 night so having all my shower stuff and a little makeup was nice. hair brush was key, and i had hubby bruch my hair when i was feeling lousy.
i brought really comfy slippers for walking the halls, and i loved having those.
ok, that’s all for now. i really do hope you don’t end up with a c-section, but if you do, remember it is a horrible 72 hours or so, but once I got home, it was a piece of cake (with pain meds of course)

An Ipod/music for in case you can’t sleep for all the beeping/screaming/groaning sounds in the hospital. Alternatively birthing music.

The Casual Perfectionist
To be honest, I didn’t wear “real clothes” of any type until I left the hospital. You’ll be amazed at the amount of bodily fluids that can get on EVERYTHING, and frankly, I wanted the hospital to do all of THAT laundry. 😉
I was perfectly fine in the gowns they provided, and that huge mesh underwear is AWESOME. (They gave me a robe, and their nursing gowns were very handy…could depend on your particular hospital and what they provide.)
Also, I second what a previous commenter said about taking all the huge pads you can. We called them Elephant Pads. They are the largest things I’ve EVER seen, and they make the pads you bought look teeny tiny. The scary thing is that you’ll wonder if they’re big enough! 😉
The nurses made sure to bring me extra bed pads…those blue absorbent blanket-like pads. I used those in the hospital and at home.
Our hospital provided us with everything we needed for our baby, and she didn’t wear “real clothes” until the day she left, too.
GOOD LUCK!!

Sounds like you have it all under control!
One thing I can add is, that my mother had told me to pack a point of inspiration. – or something to focus on while you are having contractions and pushing little baby bean out.
This was a HUGE help for me. I had baby socks hanging from my hospital room ceiling until the moment she got to finally wear them on her tiny feet.
Awww, it was amazing…

Like many people have already said, FOR SURE, save your precious diapers and wipes for when you get home. You’ll go through them so fast, and the hospital provides you with what you need while you’re there, so save yourself the money.
I like having flip flops, for the shower and also for just walking around, even during labor. I think have socks on my feet would have driven me insane.
Breath mints for while you’re in labor. For you and your husband. You’re just gonna have to trust me on this one.
A robe.
Food. Lots of snacks. (for after labor, obv.) Hospital food is nasty.
I didn’t take any clothes; basically just a robe and a larger-than-normal Juicy sweatsuit for going home. I didn’t want to ruin any of my other clothes, because I knew they’d get disgusting.
And yes, when you get discharged, get all the vaginal paraphernalia that you can! Including the sprayer, ice pads, mesh panties, and stool softeners.
Hope that is helpful! I hope, for your sake, that he comes out soon! 🙂

Do take a nice outfit for your son. At my hospital a professional photogragher took pictures in the nursery.

I’m going to ditto what a lot of other folks said.
Leave the diapers, wipes, and pads at home – the hospital will provide more than enough for free (and, yes, be sure to swipe as many as you can to take home).
A light robe – even if you’re in your own nightgown, you’ll feel more “together” having a robe to put on if you go out in the hall for anything. (Btw, I brought my own nightgown and ended up never using it – I did use my own socks and underwear though. I HATED the mesh underwear and instead brought some mega comfy Hanes granny panties – that I had no issue throwing out if they got stained, etc, and don’t plan to wear again.)
Slippers (with good bottom grip) – I also brought flip-flops but didn’t use them b/c I didn’t shower until I got home.
The Boppy is a must! It’s super helpful for breastfeeding. I had a c-section, so my abdomen was particularly weak so I used my arms a lot to get out of bed, so they were tired the first two days… so balancing Nate on the boppy while I bf was fantastic.
I also brought my netbook. Since my c-section was scheduled, I knew I’d be at the hospital for 3-4 days and would want to update Facebook and my blog and answer emails.
I hope you get some relief and he comes soon!

I am far from having my first child, but something that is on my list of things to pack in the hospital bag is a flashlight. Because if you shine the flashlight at the baby’s head in a dark room, you can make sure that (s)he has a brain. Call it Med Student Syndrome or whatever, but knowing my kid has a brain would make me feel better. Plus, flashlights are a lot cheaper than CT/MRI scans.

Boppy.
Pillow – in a brightly colored case so it doesn’t get mixed in with the hospital pillows.
I/both my daughters LOVED to be swaddled and I found the SwaddleMe to be the easiest option.
Nursing bras/tanks.
I didn’t actually bring my own clothes/pajamas (except for something to wear home) the second time around because the first time, I did and they never saw the outside of the bag. I was much happier to let the hospital wear get icky than my own stuff. That way, too, my stuff was all clean when I got home.
I’d also suggest leaving your own pads at home and using what the hospital provides. Yes, they are huge, but trust me: you’ll want/need them to be that big!

Everyone else has already said everything I’d recommend, but I wanted to reiterate one thing:
chapstick and lotion. More than any other toiletry, those two were crucial for the hospital stay. I went through practically a whole bottle of lotion while I was there.

I’m 37 weeks too (and named Molly too); I haven’t packed yet, but here’s what worked for me with my first baby:
laptop (we sent out updates to our family while in labor)
ipod (we hooked this up to the laptop, we’d made a birthing soundtrack about six hours long that was great for labor also)
maternity clothes (from about the 6 month mark) because regular clothes still didnt’ fit for a long time after
magazines (I couldn’t focus on books during labor, but magazines were great)
childcare/nursing book for tips (breastfeeding can be really hard and lactation consultants are busy enough that you may not get to see them as much as you like)
snacks, water (mostly for my husband)
camera and phone chargers
and
I don’t know if you’re planning to do this, but we brought a cord blood donation kit to hand over when we checked in.
Also, some people like nipple cream; I found going braless to be the most helpful (I know people say breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt, but i think it does at first, until your nipples “toughen”, and I hated the feeling of anything against them while they were sore- is this TMI?)
Good luck!

Navigating the Mothership
One word of caution about the Always pads – they can be extremely irritating. I was mystified by the choices of pads (did you see the pads for plus-sized women? how odd!) so I picked up Always, too. I ended up causing even MORE trauma to the lady bit region w/those pads and have since discovered this to be a problem for many women. So just my two cents in case you want to exchange them for another brand. (Cause it wouldn’t be awkward or anything to exchange maxi pads!)
Here’s my post-birth recovery post which includes pictures of the gigantic pads & mesh underwear:http://preggyblonde.blogspot.com/2009/06/recovery.html TMI is a way of life for me, clearly.
I’ll cross my fingers for you that Wed is your lucky day! 🙂

I have never had a baby, but I have heard that it is helpful to bring comforting things from home. A photo, a book, a blanket…something that feels familiar to make your hospital room feel a little less clinical and a little more homey after you give birth.

Woah. Just had a reality check. Our babies will be here in 3ish weeks.
Just… Woah.
It’s like I knew it. But, we’re both packing our bags. We’re getting READY for them to be here.
(Thanks for the comment on my blog. It’s hard to remember sometimes that every girl is different. Especially when it comes to pregnancy/labor.
By the way, I didn’t get checked for dilation this week. I’m betting it’s definitely something, because last time she wasn’t head down for all that long, now she’s been that way for a good week or two)
BTW, I can’t wait to see your little man! 😀

A few other things you might want to consider is an ipod/laptop/mp3 player to play music while you are in labor, receiving blankets for your little guy, your own pillow, flip flops or slippers and a boppy/nursing pillow. Oh! And consider buying some lansinoh cream. Things you probably DONT need unless instructed by your doc/hopsital is diapers and wipes for babe and pads for you. They will provide all of that for you in the hospital and certainly plan to take everything with you when you check out…hey, you paid for it!

Carmex, Chapstick, whatever you use FOR SURE! & check with your hospital – you may not need diapers & wipes. Ours were provided.

I don’t have time to read all the comments so if these are repeats forgive me.
bottled water, drinks, etc. its nice to have these handy at all times so you can stay hydrated if room service can’t get up in time.
make sure your nails are clipped. i came to the hospital with LONG fingernails, and no one had a file or clippers and it was hard with breastfeeding, holding the baby, i kept feeling like i was scratching her!
take off your rings, my hands got really swollen from the iv and it was uncomfortable.
CHAPSTICK or vaseline, comb, LOTS OF HAIRTIES, to keep your hair back and if you lose one you’ll have more 🙂
lots of underwear, i didn’t bring enough. after day 2 i wanted my OWN underwear, the mesh ones were too lose. i think the pads you brought will be good, but they will most likely give you some, and you’ll probably be in peri-pads (the HUGIES from the hospital for at least the first day and a half)
sports or nursing bra…i also was glad i had a comfy tshirt and pj pants too, and a more fitted nursing tank top. felt more secure then the nightgown for people visiting.
also brought a cute swaddly blanket for chloe so i could wrap her in one i wanted instead of hospital blanket. and a onesie and gooing home outfit.
ok hope this helped 🙂

I read on another blog about bringing your own pillow with a super cute/pretty pillow case because you’re going to take all sorts of cute pics, why have gross white hospital linens as the background?
June 12, 2010 at 9:24 am

Not pregnant over here, but with my last pregnant friend I learned that adult diapers are better than the pads. Sounds gross. I agree. But she said that way you don’t have to worry about overflowing (and she said even the heavy pads overflow quicker than you expect). Just a thought!

I read some of the comments here and I’m sure I’m repeating some of what’s been said, but here was my experience two months ago.
You definitely don’t need diapers, wipes or pads. The hospital has plenty and (at least for me) taking advantage of their supply was awesome. I did pack a few diapers/wipes in my diaper bag in case for some crazy reason I needed them on the way home (I didn’t. Need them that is).
A pillow for you and one for Michael would be great. Hospital pillows suck. And bring a pillow case you don’t care about cause birth (and after birth) is messy. Just sayin. A pretty one for pictures sounds nice, but the same objective can be met by bringing a pretty blankey.
Lip balm for sure.
Hard candies – often they won’t let you eat, but they will let you suck on hard candies. My doctor also let me eat gummy bears.
Slippers. My hospital had a policy that you couldn’t wear socks without rubber soles due to possible slipping on the floor.
A robe. I was so glad I had a robe. I also brought a pretty night gown and pajama set, but found I didn’t want to put then on – again, because birth is messy and I found I was more inclined to get their gowns yucked up then my pretty new nursing night gown. BUT, the robe made me feel a little more human and it covered up the ugly hospital gown when I had company.
Also, I brought a lap top and my blackberry for blog reading/facebook surfing while I was recovering. I was really glad I had them with me to help pass the time.
Good luck! Can’t wait to hear all about your experience!

Just saying what everyone else says…the hospital has plenty of diapers, wipes, pads, etc. TAKE EVERYTHING. Especially the nose bulb. You will never find another one as good as the hospital one!
We even asked the nurse if there was anything else she could snag us. She loaded us up with all kinds of goodies. For as much as you are paying (or insurance is paying), its worth it to get everything you can 🙂

A friend of mine who has had 2 kids already sent me a list of items to bring for the hospital. I’ll be using this list when I put my bag together next week as I’m due July 8. If you want me to email you the list, let me know.

I don’t have any kids but I’m an auntie to a few adorable little girls. One of my best friends just had her second child and I bought her a fancy hospital gown. It was pink and flowery. She didn’t wear it for the actual birth but she changed later. She looked super cute in all the post delivery pics and it was still easy to breastfeed because it has all the snaps of a traditional gown. Check out expectingcomfort.com or byog.com.

I just had our little girl in Feb. These are the things I would bring all over again and some I wish I had :
1. Boppy pillow – it’ll come in handy.
2. PJ pants, nursing tanks and light cardigans that open in the front.
3. Evenflo Comfort Select Breast Pad with Lanolin (make sure they have the lanolin) and nipple cream with lanolin as well. It will hurt when you start breastfeeding. My hurt and bleed so bad that I almost gave up, stick with it, it will get better. BUt those are the BEST breast pads!!
4. Clothes for your husband and toiletry products.
5. Juice and water. I was so thirsty after having our little one, they’ll give you something to drink for you, but not your husband and our hospital only gave us one little containers of juice at a time.
6. Take the sprayer, medicated pads, ointments and foams that they give you. Ask for extra. I had a nurse that gave me a goodie bag of extra’s, it’ll come in handy once your home. Also take the extra diapers and those nose bulbs for the baby, we still use ours ALL the time. They should have two sizes a big teal one and a smaller blue one, we use the smaller one ALL the time.
7. A going home outfit for all of you.

Ok, so it appears that you have been given lots of great advice on what to pack in your bag. But I’ll throw in my two cents, as I did just give birth to a sweet, beautiful little boy 2 weeks ago.
I did pack LARGE underwear. Apparently at the hospital where I delivered, they don’t freely hand out the mesh panties. Dang! But you will need some large undies for those ice packs and those MEGA PADS that they give you to wear while you are there. I took pads {I used Always Infinity Nighttime and they work great} but I didn’t use them until I got home. They gave me plenty while I was there and some to bring home. Don’t worry about diapers and wipes…they will give you plenty. Not to mention, you can take home as much as you can get your hands on. 🙂
I took socks and flip flops, but ended up wearing socks around the whole time. I forgot my robe and wish I had it to wear over my gown when I had visitors. My gown didn’t reveal anything, but I felt like I needed something to cover up with.
USE THE HEAT LAMP AND THE SITZ BATH! Although, they are a bit weird, they help tremendously. And ICE PACKS.
Oh a nail file or clippers for baby. They didn’t groom him in the nursery so I was glad to have those handy.
And lastly–breastfeeding starts out hard. I’ve only been at it for just over 2 weeks and I can definitely attest that it gets easier. Each passing day gets better and better. So DON’T GIVE UP!!
Good luck, can’t wait to hear about your new bundle of joy!!!!!!

You must see and evaluate the choice of decoration and attractive to care for your child. People love these things, the traditional and conventional, will be interested to become obsolete in a place to sleep or bed linen.
Many companies that produce different patterns and exclusive baby bedding, and people generally find themselves in a confused state that decides the set of linen is accurate and the best. Therefore, you may find via the web to get an idea of a nursery can be filled and there is a discount bedding for their children.
